Interview: Mrigya
Delhi based fusion band Mrigya releases their debut album “The Composition of World Harmony 2010″. In an interview with us, the band discusses the motivation behind this fabulous offering.
Indian Music Lovers: It has been almost a decade that the band is formed. How was 2010 the right time to release the debut album?
Mrigya: The demand from our audience forced us into the studios. Besides it was like a gift to us after ten years of being together. We got our initial songs out of the system so that we could take our journey forward and make newer and more interesting stuff. It was a natural progression except for the fact that those ten years was a long long time. But I guess it was definitely worth the wait.
IML: There have been significant changes done to the signature songs like “Ganga” and “Pahari Funk” from their original releases. The underlying harmony remains the same yet there have visible alterations made overall. How do you justify these changes to the fans of original versions?
Mrigya: We all have evolved as musicians over the years, plus a couple of line up changes happened during the last ten years. And because the studio environment is completely different from a live gig, the music had to be polished for a CD release. In a disc people listen to the music in isolation, whereas the show is throbbing with the energy of thousands of people, the difference is very substantial.
IML: How have you been promoting the album – proposed concerts, appearance, shows etc?
Mrigya: Yes, there are regular concerts and we are very active on the Web and social networking sites. Besides, the video of “Ganga” should be out any day now on music channels.
IML: The signature songs still remain the best songs on the album. Do you think this album expands on the already existing sound that Mrigya offers to the fusion aficionados?
Mrigya: Well, This album is a collection of our very first compositions. There is a lot of new material we perform live now, which is expanding our own horizons, trying out more experiments and musical forms. As far as the best songs are concerned, its upto our fans to decide, our job are to make music to the best of our abilities.
IML: Indian fusion, especially Indian folk/classical and rock, has not garnered mass popularity in the country. What according to you is the reason for this – media reluctance, non-acceptance from masses or pure talent lack?
Mrigya: Media reluctance and neglect by the music labels are the two main causes. Everyone is into promoting Bollywood music. Indian Ocean found success after being around for almost twenty years and it was overdue for them a long time ago. And even in their case “Black Friday” helped them reach the final stage. But masses do appreciate such music that’s why we are around for so long.
IML: What is the way forward for Mrigya?
Mrigya: We’ll do what we know best- play music and push our envelope. Make more interesting music and continue to perform. Hope fully the second album should be out next year with a lot of new material.
IML: Your words to fans.
Mrigya: Thanks so much for the support which kept us going for the last decade. We would like to dedicate the album to our listeners and well wishers in India and across the world. We strive to push the boundaries of our music, but also try and balance our approach, so as to entertain our listeners and hope to keep doing so for a long time. Go and buy the album, it’s a culmination of a lot of hard work over the years and a very honest effort.
The album is released by EMI Virgin records and is available in all major stores in the country.
